It is native to the centre and east Europe. It is robust and has a height of 35-40 m; clean and erected trunk, extensive and rounded. It has a smooth and grey bark. When the Beech stop growing, it starts developing superficial root and grows quite slow. It can live 300 years. It has deciduous leaves. They are light green, sometimes dentate and have a length of 5-10 cm. Their nervation is marked and parallel.
It has male flowers grouped in rounded bunches and female flowers grouped from one to three. Its fruit is like a little chestnut, which can be eaten.
