It is native to China, Korea, Japan, Indochina, Himalaya and Northern Australia.
It is a deciduous bush or little tree of a length of 6 m. It is rounded and has a little top of 5-6 m. (diameter) Not very long-lived. Its average age is 100-120 years and less when it lives in the city.
It has opposite, simple leaves,which somtimes have a curly edge. They are bright and dark-green on their surface and become yellow or orange in autumn.
Its hermaphrodite flowers have a length of 6-20 cm. And a diameter of 2,5-4 cm. They bloom in late summer until autumn.
Its fruit is a dehiscent and rounded capsule of 8-12 mm. (diameter) It is black when ripe and has several winged seeds.
The Crape Myrtle bears fruit in Autumn.
