It is native to Argentina, southern Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. It can reach a height of 25 m. it has an erected and short trunk; thick and dark branches, which make a rounded top. The branches can be taken off easily. It has partially deciduous foliage; it depends on how cold the winter is. It has big and wavy leaves. They are bright green; compound of three leaflets and thorns on its visible nervation.
The Coral tree hermaphrodyte flowers, they are red or orange and they are grouped in dense bunches; very different sized petals. Its fruit is a legume that becomes black when it is ripe and few dark seeds.
